L.O.S.S.T. Special Election March 6, 2012
On Tuesday, December 6, 2011, the Cedar Rapids Extended Sales Tax (CREST) presented a petition to the Linn County Board of Supervisors requesting a special election for a local option sales and service tax. On December 21, 2011, the Hiawatha City Council, at their regular meeting, agreed our participation in the extension of the Local Option Sales and Service Tax is in the best interest of our citizens. The Hiawatha City Council approved a resolution directed to the Linn County Auditor's Office requesting submission for the extension of the imposition of a 1% Local Option Sales and Service Tax for a period of ten years commencing on July 1, 2014 to the registered voters of Linn County residing in Hiawatha.
The ballot for the March 6, 2012 Special Election will read as follows: 1. Up to 10% for property tax relief 2. The specific purposes for which the revenues shall otherwise be expended is/are 100% for any lawful purpose including, but not limited to, retirement of outstanding obligations, water & sewer system improvements, street improvements, public safety, library, and park & recreation improvements.
