Hiawatha Fire Department will be conducting it's annual "Battery Up" day on Saturday, October 21 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Firefighters will branch out across Hiawatha to help residents replace smoke detector batteries. Firefighters recommend testing smoke detectors once a month, replacing the batteries in them once a year and replacing the detectors every 10 years. A working smoke detector, along with an escape plan, drastically improves your chance of surviving a fire. Sign-ups for the program can be done by email to Chief Mike Nesslage at mnesslage@hiawatha-iowa.com or calling 319-393-4180.
