{"id":1535,"date":"2020-08-20T21:12:13","date_gmt":"2020-08-20T21:12:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hiawatha-iowa.com\/news\/?p=1535"},"modified":"2020-08-24T18:13:13","modified_gmt":"2020-08-24T18:13:13","slug":"right-of-way-tree-evaluations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hiawatha-iowa.com\/news\/right-of-way-tree-evaluations\/","title":{"rendered":"Right-of-Way Tree Evaluations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>To All Hiawatha Residents\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Starting August 20th, 2020, the City will be conducting a city-wide right-of-way tree evaluation of damage caused by the August 10<sup>th<\/sup>, derecho. We will be using the follow FEMA criteria to determine tree removal and trimming:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tree Removal-<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More than 50 percent of the crown is damaged or destroyed;<\/li>\n<li>The tree has a split trunk or broken branches that expose the heartwood;<\/li>\n<li>The tree has fallen or been uprooted within a public-use area; and\/or<\/li>\n<li>The tree is leaning at an angle greater than 30 degrees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Tree Trimming-<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Branches are greater than two inches in diameter at the point of breakage; and<\/li>\n<li>Branches are still hanging in a tree and threatening a public-use area, e.g. trails, sidewalks, paths.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The City will be soliciting quotes for the tree trimming and tree removal. To help with the process, city staff will be marking trees as follows:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Red Dot= Tree Trimming<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>White X= Tree Removal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>FEMA will only compensate for right-of-way tree stumps where roots are exposed.
