The Hiawatha Public Works Department is responsible for street maintenance, stormwater, waste water, ROW landscaping, street signs and traffic control devices, snow and ice control, basic maintenance of all city-owned vehicles, as well as assisting other departments as needed. The department consists of five full-time employees, Superintendent Rod Jasa, Foreman Trent Coberly, Equipment Operators Rob Opfer, Kevin Beckner and Kirk Stout. Hiawatha has approximately 40 miles of roadway with a surface breakdown of 33 miles of concrete, 5 miles of asphalt, and 2 miles of seal coat.
