Right-of-Way Tree Evaluations

To All Hiawatha Residents…………

Starting August 20th, 2020, the City will be conducting a city-wide right-of-way tree evaluation of damage caused by the August 10th, derecho. We will be using the follow FEMA criteria to determine tree removal and trimming:

Tree Removal-

  • More than 50 percent of the crown is damaged or destroyed;
  • The tree has a split trunk or broken branches that expose the heartwood;
  • The tree has fallen or been uprooted within a public-use area; and/or
  • The tree is leaning at an angle greater than 30 degrees.

Tree Trimming-

  • Branches are greater than two inches in diameter at the point of breakage; and
  • Branches are still hanging in a tree and threatening a public-use area, e.g. trails, sidewalks, paths.

The City will be soliciting quotes for the tree trimming and tree removal. To help with the process, city staff will be marking trees as follows:

Red Dot= Tree Trimming

White X= Tree Removal

FEMA will only compensate for right-of-way tree stumps where roots are exposed. The City will come through at a later date to grind or remove remaining stumps.
