Hiawatha Adopt A Street Tree Program

We invite you to apply to plant 1- FREE street tree in the right-of-way of your residence. The trees will be provided through the City with limited quantity available. First come first served!

Requirements:
The primary goal of the Plant a Street Tree Program is to plant right-of-way trees in the Hiawatha. As a recipient of a tree, your job will be to care for the newly-planted tree during its establishment. Caring for a tree during its establishment period (4-5 years) increases the likelihood of its survival. Your assistance helps rebuild the City canopy while helping City Staff with tree maintenance needs.

Once submitted, wait for a confirmation email from City Staff with more information and follow the timeline below:

Complete by April 11th- Mark tree location and call Iowa One Call – 1-800-292-8989 or www.iowaonecall.com It takes 48 hours(business days) for locates to be completed.

Complete by April 15th – Fill out the tree permit and return to the City of Hiawatha.

Submit permit online.

April 18th – 22th – City will inspect location of tree planting once permit is received.

April 23rd – Attend Tree Planting Event and pick up your tree. 9am-11am.

Complete by April 29th – Plant your tree and notify the City that your tree is planted. 319-393-1515 ex 251 or Rjasa@hiawatha-iowa.com.

If you are unable to pick up your tree at this event please contact us as soon as possible to make other arrangements.

Do:
•Plant a Tree

•Mulch

Don’t:
•Prune
•Fertilize
•Build a wall or raised bed around the tree
